English Spelling Bee

Thu, Dec 1, 2022

The Scripps National Spelling Bee is the nation's largest and longest-running educational program. The purpose of the Scripps National Spelling Bee is to help students improve spelling, increase their vocabulary, learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them all of their lives. Visit spellingbee.com for more information about the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which is administered on a not-for-profit basis by The E.W. Scripps Company. In order to compete at the national level, students must qualify locally which is normally sponsored by Peoria Journal Star. We would like to give our students this opportunity! On December 5, in-class classroom spelling bees (written spelling test) will be held in grades 1st-8th.

Students who spell all the chosen words correctly will move on to the oral spelling bee on Tuesday, December 6. On this day, we will pick a winner and runner-up from each class. The winners and runners-up from the 4th - 8th grade Classroom Spelling Bees will compete in the All-School Spelling Bee.

The All-School Spelling Bee originally scheduled for Friday, December 9, 2022, at 3:45PM, will be rescheduled to Wednesday, December 14, (Location: MS LA Room). The competitors for the All-School Spelling Bee will compete until there is one winner named the “School Winner” and one runner-up named the “School Runner-up”. The school winner will go on to compete in the Local Spelling Bee Final at a location decided by the Scripps Spelling Bee. If for some reason the school winner is not able to participate, the school runner-up will take the school winner’s place.  We hope that this spelling bee competition helps DU students expand their spelling skills and enrich their vocabularies.
